This is the Truckee Mystery Quilt, and it is done!
I found this quilt in the boxes of sewing stuff when I unpacked about 6 months ago. Here I explained why this had been in a box for about 6 years. When I found it all but the last step in the bocks were done and ready for assembly. This is not a pattern that I would have picked out myself which is the beauty of the mystery... I ended up with something that I never would have started had I known what I was starting.
All washed up it is 49 x 66. The top is all flannel and the backing is a Moda print from my stash. I had in my mind that I wanted to back it in flannel as well and one day it occurred to me how perfect this fabric would be. It looks like it was made to go together. The binding is also something I found in my stash. The binding is the only part I am not thrilled with. I sewed it on by machine and my technique still needs some work.
I loved it before washing, but after it is all puffy and all the little imperfections in my quilting went away like magic!
We are suposed to get a 'wintery mix' in the morning (in CA we called it slushing) and I already plan to cuddle with this quilt and a cup of coffee in the morning for the morning news!
Beautiful! I'll have to try a mystery quilt sometime.
ReplyDeleteI like your quilt, especially the backing fabric. But I know what you mean about possibly not picking the pattern if you had known. Once I asked a question on my blog to see how many folks liked the traditional patterns or modern ones. I tend to lean towards modern, but I was surprised that a lot of folks really like the traditional look better. I think your quilt above falls into that category, and it's probably good to have a sprinkling of both kinds in your home. Have a warm cozy time cuddling under it with your coffee.
ReplyDeleteLovely rich colours Diane and you're right about that backing fabric, it's perfect!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cuddlely quilt. I enjoy doing Mystery Quilts.
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful...nothing better than a good flannel quilt, fresh out of the dryer...all comy cozy! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThat beautiful quilt will be perfect to snuggle with. Love it.
ReplyDeleteThat quilt is so pretty! I am working on machine quilting a pretty good size quilt right now on my little machine and am trying not to give up hope on it because there are lots of little imperfections in my lines. I'm hoping when it's washed up I won't even be able to see them any more, like you said! I really love your baby quilt in the post below too. The pattern and colors are really nice. Thanks for being one of my followers. I recognize your name and picture whenever you leave a comment. I've got you entered into my giveaway and will announce the winner tomorrow! I want to see that heart quilt if you come across it soon. :) Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI think your choice of fabrics are what make this quilt. Backing IS perfect.
ReplyDeleteI've never made a quilt with flannel on both the front and back but someday am going to get big and brave and do so. What better for the wintertime? I knew of one gal who made a flannel quilt for her sister-in-law and shed many tears and learned some new curse words during the process. (Flannel both sides.) She had a terrible time quilting it (maybe her batting was too thick??) and named it -- actually did name it this on the quilt label -- "The Quilt from Hell."
May none of us ever have to make one of those!
I like the way quilts get wrinkly after washing & drying....and they look like older quilts. I like the colors of flannel you have. There are some really nice flannels available now.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is really pretty and looks so snuggly. I love to put flannel on the backs of my quilts, at least the ones I want to cuddle with. Good Job and more importantly it's finished.
ReplyDeleteI love doing mystery quilts. Our LQS does one quareterly, and I've been doing them for a couple years. I love it. Your quilt looks great:-)
ReplyDeleteI love your flannel quilt, I made one out of a puzzle pattern, scrappy, and I love it. I decided to treat myself to some white satin binding.
ReplyDeleteOh hey Diane! I told others about your February GiveAway at Julie's blog http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/2010/02/lots-of-giveaways.html
ReplyDeleteHope you didn't mind. :) Sew On!
Nice job! I have been wanting to make a quilt with flannel, but I have read online that the quilting seems to fade away once it is washed. I am unsure, the soft flannel just seems so appealing.
ReplyDeletei really don't like mystery quilts since it is too late to make a minor change and just ending up with a single bad block rather than a whole quilt. Just finished the last mystery quilt i did over 10 years ago and have decided to gift it because it just makes me mad when i look at it because i still love the fabric and the pattern kathy
ReplyDeleteI love the Christmas colors! it looks so festive, like you should sit in front of a fire on a cold December evening on Christmas eve.
