RWB Irish Chain

I showed this project a couple of months ago as one of the UFO's that were found when I unpacked my stuff from moving here 6 years ago. I had found a backing I liked and it had joined the stack of WIP awaiting the walking foot. I was thinking it would be a nice table topper for July since the colors were so patriotic, however.... my husband recently moved into a new office at work that had terrible art work and he asked if I would make something for him to hang to replace the corporate art.

I decided this would be perfect! The company logo has these colors, and this has enough contrast it will pop as a wall hanging. I completed the binding yesterday and today it is off to work.

I made it from what is now an old Eleanor Burns pattern, Irish Chain single and double from the Quilt in a Day series. Do you buy quilt pattern books? Single patterns? Do you buy them online or in a store? Or do you scope out tutorials or other references that are free on line? This is definitely a pattern that if I made it today I would be finding it online rather than pay for, but, at the time (almost 10 years ago) that was not an option, so I consider it $7.95 well spent.

I am adding this as my Sew & Tell Friday contirbution.

Be sure to check out the other great projects. Last week over 40 projects were listed!

February Giveaway is already closed for this day, but be sure to visit and comment on my most recent post and any new posts untill 2/12 for a chance to win!

  1. It's beautiful! I have one quilt book that I bought and have been working my way through the book doing those patterns and making up some of my own along the way!

  2. Love it! I have more pattern books and magazines with more projects than I could make in 2 lifetimes and yet I still pick up new books now and then, and I have a whole lot of disc space on my laptop filled with free patterns and tutorials from the internet. It's a sickness I know.

  3. I think the black and red is quite striking in this quilt and nice that its going up in a public space too! I have never bought a pattern but do like to buy quilting books, sometimes just for the inspiration they bring. Since I started blogging I bookmark quilts that Isee and like online for future reference.

  4. Beautiful piece to have hanging out in public. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't bring you in some commissioned work.

I rarely buy a single pattern for a quilt. I love books so have a good collection of quilting books that supply me with plenty of patterns or inspiration.

My quilting magazine subscriptions have been whittled down to two these days but I regularly mark patterns in them I want to make.

I get ideas from different sites online but usually don't download free patterns.

  5. Well, now that just worked out perfect.
I will buy a book on line if I have seen the inside first. I don't buy many single patterns. I do print off a lot of free stuff on the internet. Not sure when I will get to them but I have them. lol

  7. Beautiful quilt. I really like the border fabric you chose. I have a couple of books with patterns and a couple of individual patterns, but for the most part, I like to think up the idea in my head!

  14. It looks lovely, Diane! How nice to decorate husband's office. That reminds me, I made one for my husbands meeting room years ago which still needs some stitches in the binding. Now, where did I put that...

  15. Fun black and red pattern!

I never seem to use patterns unless it is applique or block of the month. I usually go to flickr and get inspired! Moda bakeshop is also great for ideas. Makes you want to buy more fabric too!

  16. Great use of this classic pattern--very manly. I have lots of books and magazines which seem a better value than single patterns. I rarely buy any of that now, just using single blocks as starting points--there is so much inspiration all over! Plus I don't have room for any more paper--unless I get rid of some fabric :)

  17. Those traditional patterns like Irish Chain sure do make a stunning quilt. I only finished my double irish chain last year. It had been hiding in a cupboard.

  19. Very Patriotic but not overly so. I'm sure it will brighten up your husband's office and I bet he will get a lot of visitors just to see the quilt!
